"That man can interrogate as well as observe nature, was a lesson slowly learned in his evolution."

- William Osler

"Nature that framed us of four elements, warring within our breasts for regiment, doth teach us all to have aspiring minds."

- Christopher Marlowe

Who says poetry is boring?  Nuclear Poetry aims to challenge this.

Please join us for a special night of the series as we present “Voices from the Underground” - the first in a series of 2010/2011 shows; each focusing on one of the elements: FIRE, water, wind & earth.

The basement of Elmo will again transform into a 'literary bomb shelter' for a night of performance art and spoken word; Creative writers of all sorts will read and sing original works by candlelight, JenGer Love will decorate the room with photographs, and a special multimedia opening inspired by the recent eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökul volcano in Iceland and the staggering number of earthquakes across the globe this year will kick start the night. Majestic Mother Nature: this one's for you.

Doors at 8, show at 8:30. Thanks to the people at Elmo, there’s NO COVER for the event.

We'll be recording the event for podcast on iTunes and the night will end with an open mic, so if you have poems burning holes in your notebook, don't be shy - bring them along. Especially if you've never read in front of an audience before.

Our troupe of Nuclear Poets for the night:

  1. -ROCK WILK is an actor and playwright of the upcoming solo show Broke Wide Open @ PS122, an accomplished poet (2009 Nuyorican semifinalist) & socially and politically charged vocalist who creates all of his art while riding the subways of NYC.

  2. -TAI ALLEN is dangerous--a quadruple threat if ever there was one: poet, recording artist, composer and publisher hailing from the wilds of Brooklyn. Creative Director/Producer of Vice Lounge.

  3. -JAHNILLI AKBAR, regular Nuyorican slam poet and member of the "Ain't Never Scared" poetry team. Originally from MIssissippi, now in his second year living in NYC.

  4. -ALYSSA GOLDSTEIN, recent New School graduate; sultry opera singer and poet with a penchance for breaking hearts and binding beautiful books.

  5. -BRENDAN WOLFF, poet, student and occasional teacher from Brooklyn. Member of the SUNY Binghampton’s 2009 & 2010 poetry slam teams.

  6. -BLAKE DRUMMOND, up and coming singer/songwriter who plays a mean guitar; member of the band Wavebrain.

  7. -AARON WIMMER, poet/performance & new media artist interested in world events, the music of magma, mortality and doing daft things with electronic devices.

Nuclear Poetry is a growing artistic community that was formed as an experiment to get New School poetry students together to share their work for a night. An amazing thing has happened in the past 23 months: people started coming and a strong & open community began to grow. With it came a real sense of spirit filling the room during the shows, sharing the simple message that everyone has a voice. Every show is different, often taking inspiration from current headlines and events. Readers for the night include writers of all ages and levels--professors, published writers, students and beginners. Some quiet, some loud, some traditional, some experimental. It's everyone's night.

Please join us.  Bring an open heart and love for writing and let's make some magic.

So excited!
