"Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before."
- Audre Lorde
Please join us for a special night of Nuclear Poetry as we pay tribute to the new decade and begin our yearlong Time Capsule Project: a collaboration of words, images and music.
The basement of Elmo will again transform into a 'literary bomb shelter' for a night of performance art and spoken word; Creative writers of all sorts will read original works by candlelight, drinks will be served and a special multimedia opening set to music by the Editors, Bear in Heaven and a song specifically written for the event will kickstart the night. Visual Artwork by John Gaita.
Doors at 8, show at 8:30. Thanks to the people at Elmo there's no cover for the event, so just buy a drink or two if you're thirsty.
We'll be recording the event in full for podcast on iTunes and nuclearpoetry.com & the night will end with an open mic, so if you have poems burning holes in that moleskin notebook, don't be shy - bring them along. Especially if you've never read in front of an audience before.
Our fantastic troupe of readers for the night:
CHRISTINE HAMM, sexy academic vixen, poet extraordinaire. Her middle name could be 'Wit" - PhD candidate in English Literature at Drew University.
DIANA ARNOLD, kidnapped Californian. Brought to the big Bad city where she’s performed her solo work for the past 8 years; trained at NYU/New School.
TOMMY PICO; striking poet and ringleader/publisher of the Birdsong Collective & Micropress in Williamsburg.
CHERYL BURKE, celebrated writer/performance poet also hailing from Brooklyn.
JAMES MERENDA, slam poet and playwright; member of the mighty Intangible Collective. "Awkward Happens"
KAIT ROKOWSKI, fiery & smart rising slam poet
ALYSSA GOLDSTEIN, sultry opera singer and poet with a penchance for breaking hearts and binding beautiful books.
LAURA BYKOWSKI, poet and visual artist; lover of libraries, cleavers and paint.
AARON WIMMER, poet/performance & new media artist interested in worldly events, mortality and doing daft things with electronic devices.
..and RICKY PERSSON, singer/songwriter who writes songs about pirates and lullabies for lost loves. You'd think his blue eyes would require batteries but they remarkably do not.
Nuclear Poetry was formed as an experiment to get New School poetry students together to share their work for a night. People seemed to like it and the series was born. An amazing thing has happened in the past year and a half: people started coming and a strong community began to grow, and with it came a real sense of spirit filling the room during the shows and the simple message that everyone has a voice. Every show is different, often taking inspiration from current headlines and events. Readers for the night include writers of all ages and levels--professors, published writers, students and beginners. Some quiet, some loud, some traditional, some experimental. It's everyone's night.
"When primary colors come together, the purest of light shines through - and everybody's free to wear sunscreen." Please join us. Bring an open heart and love for writing and let's make some magic.
So excited!
